On April 26th Nordic Match, together with Sweden China Trade Council, hosted a webinar with the topic of “China as a M&A market for Swedish Companies”, as about 27 top-tier Swedish corporations across various industries, such as manufacture, automobile, and telecom etc., intriguingly participated in.

During the presentation, Nordic Match professionals Markus Dahlström, Tony Wang and Sean Ni discussed M&A in China for Swedish companies in a holistic way. Markus briefed the team of Nordic Match and introduced several leading industries in China. Following Tony’s sharing session in more explicit reasons and strategies about China M&A, Sean orchestrated common issues and essential timelines for conducting M&A activities in China.

Although 2023 still witnessed increasing market uncertainties caused by slowing post-covid economy, there has been no evidence of companies leaving China, Moreover, it has become even more critical than ever to think long-term and develop an aligned China strategy.

China has been on a major transformation journey in the past decades, urbanizing at massive speed and large size, contributing to the largest market in many industries, which is embedded many significant opportunities for Swedish companies. driven by the macro initiatives, as well as consumer habits transformation in China.

When the opportunity has been identified, M&A can be used as an efficient strategic tool to expand the footprint, manufacturing capacity and distribution channels. With the acquisition of a “local champion”, the company can gain a local brand, and through its existing platform build a competitive position for example in a previously untapped mid-market segment.

However, there is no standard formula as the market is changing rapidly, and therefore companies need to stay proactive and reach out professional services when planning their M&A roadmaps.
