• Can you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?

My name is Elias, I’m 28 years old and I am currently an Analyst Summer Intern at Nordic Match in Shanghai. I hold a B.Sc. in Economics from Lund University, and I am currently pursuing an MBA at Peking University.

Prior to the internship at Nordic Match, I have worked full time in Swedish companies such as TeliaCompany (Largest TelCo in Nordics + Baltics) and Handelsbanken (One of the three major banks in Sweden/Scandinavia). More recently, I have also been an intern at companies such as Danaher Corporation and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.

When I’m not working or studying, I try to travel as much as possible as well as go skiing & snowboarding whenever I have the chance. And I have recently picked up an interest in marathon running!

  • What motivated you to apply for an internship at Nordic Match?

First, I have a great interest in cross-border transactions, MNC’s, and the M&A industry, which is the field where I would like to work within in the future. Second, I figured that working with Nordic Match in Shanghai would increase my exposure towards the Chinese market, as well as hone my skills working within investment banking. Especially since you are a boutique firm where I could get more responsibility than if I was working for a larger advisor. Lastly, I reasoned that Nordic Match – with your Sino-Nordic focus – and my profile as a Swedish MBA student in China (spoiler, we are not that many here) should be a perfect match. And I’d like to be bold here and say that I believe I was right!

  • How would you describe your overall experience during your internship at Nordic Match?

My overall experience during my internship at Nordic Match has been very enriching and rewarding. I have been exposed to the dynamic world of M&A between China and the Nordics, working within a talented team that fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment. From day one, I felt welcomed and valued, which motivated me to actively contribute to the team’s objectives. The hands-on experience, combined with the guidance and mentorship from seasoned professionals, has greatly enhanced my understanding of the industry.

  • What were the most memorable moments or achievements during your internship at Nordic Match?

Several moments stand out as particularly memorable and impactful. One highlight was being involved in a pitch towards a potential client, where I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand how early-stage M&A negotiations unfold. Another significant achievement was contributing with a comprehensive market analysis that provided valuable insights for discussions regarding a potential divestiture project. Additionally, participating in team meetings and strategy discussions has allowed me to see the broader picture and how my work has contributed to the company’s goals.

  • What advice would you give to future international interns who join Nordic Match to make the most out of their experience?

Haha like always in China, try to learn the language. Not because it is ultimately needed in your work life, but it enrichens the everyday experience dramatically. Workwise, I believe future international interns should prioritize the following:

  1. Proactive Learning: Take the initiative to learn and understand different aspects of M&A. Seek opportunities to expand your knowledge beyond your assigned tasks
  2. Open Communication: Don’t hesitate to ask questions and engage in discussions. Effective communication with the team will help you better comprehend the company’s objectives
  3. Networking: I had the pleasure to join Nordic Match’s annual Summer Party where I met very interesting decision makers from all kinds of different industries. That is also a memorable moment from my time here
  4. Adaptability: Embrace challenges and quick changes in projects. Flexibility is crucial in a dynamic field like M&A
  5. Seek Feedback: Regularly request feedback on your performance. Constructive criticism will aid in your personal and professional growth, as well as make sure that you are on the right track with your assignments
  6. Cultural Awareness: Be aware of cultural differences and embrace diversity within the team. This fosters mutual respect, a harmonious work environment, and it also makes your experience much more rewarding!

  • As your internship is coming to an end, what are your key takeaways from this experience, and how do you think it will impact your future career?

Firstly, I’d like to say that I’ve gained a comprehensive understanding of the M&A landscape, from pre-work such as market analyses, material preparations, and deal structuring. Secondly, I’ve witnessed the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving complex goals and developing new strategies. Thirdly, the mentorship and guidance I have received from seasoned professionals have set a high standard for my own professional growth. Lastly, the exposure to a fast-paced, results-driven environment has honed my decision-making skills.

Looking ahead, these takeaways will undoubtedly impact my future career. They’ve equipped me with a solid foundation to continue to pursue a career in M&A with confidence. The experiences and lessons learned will guide me as I continue to develop both my technical skills and soft skills during my academic journey, ensuring my ability to contribute effectively to any team and organization in the field of finance and business.
